more... like... to kingdom come

(i trust you and all have a more listenable version!)

Forefather pointed
to kingdom come
Sadly told his only son
Just be careful what you do
It all comes back on you.

False witness spread the news
Somebody's gonna lose
Either she or me or you,
Nothing we can do.

(Chorus)

So
Don't you say a word
Or reveal a thing
you've learned
Time will tell you well
If you truly, truly fell
Tarred and feathered, yea!
Thistles and thorns,
One or the other
He kindly warns.
Now you look out the
window tell me
What do you see?
I see a golden calf pointing
Back at me.

I been sitting in here
for so darn long
Waitin' for the end
to come along.
Holy roaster on the brink
Take a chance, swim or sink.

False witness, cast an evil eye
said I cannot tell a lie,
Haints and saints
don't bother me
I'm not alone you see.

(Chorus)

Good call!
Wish they had done more Band songs besides The Weight and Masterpiece. I would have liked to heard them do Daniel & The Sacred Harp and King Harvest (Has Surely Come) too, just to name a couple.

Masterpiece is a Dylan tune. And I think Jerry might have been doing it even prior to the band. Or at least the Cahoots album.

I know. I just looke up Cahoots and it came out in 71, for some reason I was thinking 73. Either way I assumed he got it from Dylan. But then again with all that time he spent with the band on that train maybe he learned it there.

Masterpiece is indeed a Dylan song which Dylan gave to the Band to do, however Dylan, without informing the Band, released his own version on his greatest hits volume 2 album at the same time the Band's version recorded for the Cahoots album was released. I understand there were some hurt feelings over that. It is still associated with the Band as is "Tears Of Rage" another Dylan song written by Dylan for The Band. To the best of my memory Masterpiece was the last radio hit The Band ever had. The Band's version was released as a single in 1971 and got a lot of radio play back then. I still think they had the definitive version.
